Dear friend,
It is not often that the League for Yiddish promotes an activity that is not in Yiddish, but the opera The Great Dictionary of the Yiddish Language – by Alex Weiser and Ben Kaplan – is an exception.
This unique production, co-sponsored by the League, is partly in Yiddish, and brings to life the tragicomic history of the making of that dictionary, which Mordkhe Schaechter (founder and former Executive Director of the League for Yiddish) worked on for many years as associate editor.
While our Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary (print and on-line) is not a substitute for that monumental work, it is based on much of the lexicographic research that would have gone into The Great Dictionary, had it not stalled after four volumes of the letter alef.
For more information, or if you will be in the NYC area in September, please go to https://yivo.org/Great-Dictionary to reserve your free ticket(s) to enjoy this unique Yiddish-cultural event. The tickets are going fast!
Looking forward to seeing you there.
Vareme grusn,
Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath
Board Chair
