  “Yiddish Today” is a series of video programs that present artists, researchers, and cultural activists from around the world who are creating contemporary Yiddish culture.

  ‪‪Watch this this conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and Shifra Lowen Hear about her journey of growing up and raising a family in a small Hasidic village in Quebec. Delve into her experiences with girls’ education, and Yiddish creation within the community, including the resonance of her Yiddish songs across the Hasidic world. ‪Explore her transformative decision to leave the community together with her entire family and gain insights into her current life path. 

  Shifra Lowen grew up in a Hasidic family, married, and raised a family in Kiryas Tosh. During her time there, she passionately engaged in writing and composing Yiddish songs, crafting songs for girls’ camps and schools, and even for music discs featuring male vocalists. ‪However, her life took a new turn when she decided to leave her community. Today, she resides in Montreal with her entire family.
