There’s a well-known medresh in the Gemora, that the Exodus from Egypt and from slavery happened only because the Israelites didn’t change their names, their clothing or their language. The Ch’sam Soyfer pointed out that it was in the merit of these three things that the Jewish people was able to maintain its national identity. Of course, nobody spoke mame-loshn in Egypt. But Yiddish has, in its more than one thousand years of existence, gone through very hard times, yet it continues to stand proudly here among us. The League for Yiddish is proud that our raison d’etre, our primary goal, is indeed to maintain the Yiddish language, inspire people to speak Yiddish on a daily basis whenever possible, have the utmost respect for the language, and maintain it as a living force within Jewish life.  However, we couldn’t do any of this without your dedicated support. We thank you for maintaining and sustaining our organization so that we can continue to pursue our mission. In these few days before Peysakh, when we prepare to commemorate the Exodus, let us truly celebrate our language and our continuity.  A very happy Peysakh from all of us at the League for Yiddish, and a gutn yontef to all.
