Heavy Metal in Yiddish: A pre-war musical tradition in a new guise
One might think that metal music has very little to do with Jews and the Yiddish language, but there are two musical groups in the world – "Gevolt", based in Israel, and "Dibukim", based in Sweden – which create metal music entirely in mame-loshn. This lecture will analyze the connection between metal music and the Yiddish language and culture, and discover how these musicians help Jews of Ashkenazi descent deepen their Jewish identity and discover the Yiddish language and pre-Holocaust Yiddish traditions.
(This event will not have simultaneous English translation. However, after two weeks, you’ll be able to watch the event on YouTube with subtitles)

Prof. Lily Kahn is a professor of loshn-koydesh and Yiddish languages in the Department of Yiddish Studies at University College London. She is the author of the textbook “Colloquial Yiddish” and is a member of a research group working on the linguistic aspects of Yiddish in the Hasidic world.

* Mendy Cahan is the founder and director of YUNG YIDISH, a Yiddish organization in Israel since 1990. Mendy is an actor, and has performed in countless Yiddish works over the past 30 years, in theater, film and television programs. Mendy is also a singer, and has founded a Yiddish band "Der Yiddish-Express" which has released a CD called "Yiddish Fever." |
