"Verter fun der Vokh" Celebrates Its Bar-Mitzvah!
Join us for a Zoom conversation with our Board Chair
Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath
Since 2013, the League for Yiddish has been posting Verter fun der Vokh (Words of the Week) — a beloved series of thematic Yiddish word lists that has captivated countless readers and students around the world. Over the years, several hundred lists have appeared, covering every imaginable topic: holidays, food, clothing, politics, society, animal sounds, and much more.
In this interview, writer and editor Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath will share the story behind 13 years of the project: how it all began, which topics have most captivated our audience, what were some of the more memorable questions/comments from readers. She will also reflect on her poetry, her Yiddishist upbringing on Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx, and her major work on the monumental Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary.
