Since 2013, the League for Yiddish has been posting Verter fun der Vokh (Words of the Week) — a beloved series of thematic Yiddish word lists that has captivated countless readers and students around the world. Over the years, several hundred lists have appeared, covering every imaginable topic: holidays, food, clothing, politics, society, animal sounds, and much more.
In this interview, board chair and editor Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath shares the story behind 13 years of the project: how it all began, which topics have most captivated our audience, as well as what some of the more memorable questions/comments were from our readers. She also reflects on her poetry, her Yiddishist upbringing on Bainbridge Avenue in the Bronx, and her major work on the monumental Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary.
