די ייִד‫יש־ליגע פֿרייט זיך דערמיט, וואָס בײַם אַרײַנפֿירן דאָס יאָר תּשפּ״ו, 

פּראַ‫ווען מיר מיט שטאָלץ דאָס

בר‫־מיצווה־יאָר פֿון „ווערטער פֿון דער וואָך“

די ער‫שטע לעקסישע פּובליקאַציע מיטן איין־איינציקן ציל אויסצולערנען ליבהאָבערס פֿון ייִדיש איבער דער וועלט רעדן אַ מער פֿליסיק ייִדיש. דערצו האַלטן מיר מיט אײַך אָן אַ קאָנטאַקט וואָך־אײַן וואָך־אויס!

וו‫ע‫רטער פֿון דער וואָך האָט געהאַט זײַן בראשית מיט 13 יאָר צוריק, בשעת מיר האָבן שטאַרק געהאָרעוועט איבערן אַרומנעמיק ענגליש־ייִדיש ווערטערבוך. אין יענער תּקופֿה האָבן אַ צאָל ייִדיש־אָנהענגערס אונדז רעגולער געפֿרעגט „ווי זאָגט מען דאָס וואָרט/דעם אויסדרוק אויף ייִדיש?“... אַזוי ווי דאָס ווערטערבוך האָט נאָך נישט געהאַט געזען די ליכטיקע שײַן – נישט געדרוקטערהייט נישט אָנלײַן – האָבן מיר גענומען צעשיקן טעמאַטישע רשימות (אויפֿן סמך פֿונעם תּוכן פֿון ווערטערבוך) וואָס האָבן געשפּילט אַזאַ תּוכיקע ראָלע אין העלפֿן יחידים רעדן אַ מער אידיאָמאַטיש מאַמע־לשון אינעם 21סטן יאָרהונדערט.

וו‫אָס פֿאַר אַ ברייטע טעמעס האָבן מיר געדעקט? צווישן זיי: געזעלשאַפֿטלעכער יושר, אין שפּילפּלאַץ, ווײַן, די וועלטסעריע, קינסטלעכע אינטעליגענץ, חיות רעדן ייִדיש, שטוב־מכשירים, טאַקסיס, קעץ, און באָדן זיך... אָט די רשימות (און עטלעכע הונדערט אַנדערע) געפֿינען זיך אויף אונדזער וועבזײַט.

ווע‫רטער פֿון דער וואָך גייט ווײַטער פֿאָרויס מיט אַ יוגנטלעכן כּוח; לעצטנס האָבן מיר אַרײַנגעפֿירט טעמעס וואָס העלפֿן מיטן קאָרעקטן באַניץ פֿון אידיאָמאַטישע ווערטער אויף ייִדיש, וואָס אין די ייִדיש־קלאַסן ווערן זיי נישט אַזוי טיף דערמאָנט. ל‫משל, ווי אַזוי מע ניצט די װערטער נו; סתּם; גאָר און גאָרנישט; פֿאָרט און דאָך; ווערטער צום באַדאַנקען און זײַן העפֿלעך, און אַנדערע.

אַ צ‫אָל פֿון אײַך האָבן אונדז געשריבן מיט אַ בקשה צו דערמאָנען געוויסע אַנדערע ווערטער; אַנדערע האָבן געגעבן צו שטײַער מיט סינאָנימען וואָס מע האָט געהערט פֿונעם טאַטן צי פֿון דער באָבען. ס׳איז אַ נחת מיטצואַרבעטן מיט אײַך אין אַזאַ שותּפֿות!

As the new Jewish year 5786 approaches, the League for Yiddish proudly celebrates 

the bar-mitzvah year of “Verter fun der Vokh”

(Words of the Week)

the first Yiddish lexical publication with the sole purpose of teaching Yiddish aficionados the world over a more fluent Yiddish. It’s also our way of keeping in touch with you on a weekly basis!

"Verter fun der Vokh" was created 13 years ago while we were still working on the manuscript of the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary (CEYD). During that time, we received numerous requests from Yiddish lovers around the world asking how to say this word or that expression in Yiddish. Since the dictionary was not yet in print or online, we started issuing topical lists of "Verter fun der Vokh" (based on the contents of the CEYD) that have been so instrumental in helping people speak a more idiomatic Yiddish in the 21st century.

The wide range of topics have included: Social Justice, In The Playground, Wine, World Series, Artificial Intelligence, Animals Speaking Yiddish, Household Tools, Taxis, Cats, and Taking A Bath….  See our website for these and many other topical lists.

"Verter fun der Vokh" continues strong; most recently, we’ve begun to address the appropriate usage of idiomatic words in Yiddish that may not be broadly taught in some Yiddish classes, e.g.:  Nu; Stam; Gor vs. Gornisht; Fort vs. Dokh; Thank you/You’re welcome/Please... and others.

Many of you have written letters asking us to address specific words; others have contributed with additional synonyms that they had heard from their father or grandmother. We love hearing from you in this collaborative effort!
