במשך הונדערטער יאָרן איז מיזרח־אייראָפּע געווען דער צענטער פֿון ייִדיש־לעבן. הײַנט, נאָך דעם חורבן, האָט זיך די מאַפּע אַריבערגערוקט: אַחוץ ענגלאַנד, קלינגט ייִדיש הײַנט בעיקר אין מערבֿ־ און מיטל־אייראָפּע, דווקא אין לענדער וווּ דײַטש איז אַן אָפֿיציעלע שפּראַך – אין אַנטווערפּן, בערלין, ווין, ווײַמאַר, ציריך און אַנדערע ערטער.
אין דעם פּאַנעל, אָנגעפֿירט דורך אלי בענעדיקט, וועלן מיר באַטראַכטן די נײַע מאַפּע צוזאַמען מיט די געסט: איידל מלוביצקי, אסתּר סענדרוי, מענדי קאַהן, אַנדרעאַס שמיטגעס און דזשייק שנײַדער. דורך לעבעדיקע בײַשפּילן פֿון דער הײַנטיקער ייִדיש־וועלט – פֿון קהילות און קורסן ביז פֿעסטיוואַלן, אוניווערסיטעטן, יונגע ייִדיש־קרײַזן, גאַסנשילדן און באַמיִונגען לטובֿת אָפֿיציעלער אָנערקענונג – וועלן מיר פֿרעגן: וואָס קען דאָס נײַע באַגעגעניש צווישן ייִדיש און דײַטש באַטײַטן פֿאַר דער שפּראַך און קולטור? וואָס מיינט דאָס פֿאַר אונדז, און פֿאַרן צוגאַנג ווי מיר באַהאַנדלען הײַנט די חורבן־פֿראַגע? דאַרפֿן די מדינות געבן ייִדיש מער אָנערקענונג און שטיץ? און קען די אימיגראַציע פֿון ישׂראל קיין מערבֿ־ און מיטל־אייראָפּע האָבן אַ השפּעה אויף ייִדיש אין די קומעדיקע יאָרן?

Yiddish and German: Old Relatives, New Neighbors?
For hundreds of years, Eastern Europe was the center of Yiddish life. Today, after the Holocaust, the map has shifted: apart from England, Yiddish is heard today mainly in Western and Central Europe, precisely in countries where German is an official language – in Antwerp, Berlin, Vienna, Weimar, Zurich, and other places.
In this live Zoom panel, led by Eli Benedict, we will examine this new map together with our guests: Eidel Malowicki, Kriszta Eszter Szendrői, Mendy Cahan, Andreas Schmitges, and Jake Schneider. Through living examples from today’s Yiddish world – from communities and courses to festivals, universities, young Yiddish circles, street signs, and efforts for official recognition – we will ask: What can the new encounter between Yiddish and German mean for the language and culture? What does it imply for us, and for the way we address the question of the Holocaust today? Should states give Yiddish more recognition and support? And can immigration from Israel to Western and Central Europe have an impact on Yiddish in the coming years?

When It Gets Dark: Nightlife, Secrets, and Late Hours
Summer is almost here. The days are getting longer, the night arrives later, and with each passing day the night grows more alive. So let’s do nightlife in Yiddish!
We’ll talk about nightlife, dark bars, nightclubs, light and shadow, sleeplessness, dreams, and the kinds of thoughts and conversations that come alive specifically at night. We’ll read a few short texts and poems together, and then shmooze together. Everyone will have a chance to speak. You don’t need to speak perfect Yiddish. You just need enough to jump in. Yiddish doesn’t have to be polished to be alive!

Between tradition and imagination, folklore and faith, Jewish stories have taken many different forms. In this conversation, we wander through a world of folktales, legends, Midrashim, and Hasidic stories that still carry great power and continue to be retold and reimagined to this day.

Justin Jaron Lewis is Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Manitoba. He previously served as a congregational rabbi in Kingston, Ontario. His work ranges across Hasidism, Yiddish, Jewish literature and folklore, religion and sexuality. He is the author of Imagining Holiness: Classic Hasidic Tales in Modern Times and translator of Many Pious Women, praises of Jewish women written in Yiddish in Renaissance Italy. He has published widely on Hasidic tales and related areas of Jewish culture and thought.
