“Yiddish Today” is a series of video programs that present artists from around the world who are creating contemporary Yiddish culture.
In this episode: Prof. Lily Kahn on “Heavy Metal in Yiddish: A pre-war musical tradition in a new guise.”
One might think that metal music has very little to do with Jews and the Yiddish language, but there are two musical groups in the world – “Gevolt”, based in Israel, and “Dibukim”, based in Sweden – that create metal music entirely in mame-loshn. This lecture analyzes the connection between metal music and the Yiddish language and culture, and discovers how these musicians help Jews of Ashkenazi descent deepen their Jewish identity and discover the Yiddish language and pre-Holocaust Yiddish traditions.
In Yiddish with English subtitles. (Click CC to see the subtitles)
