Yiddish, Film and Storytelling
What happens when a young woman sets out on a journey to find a lost, blessed Hasidic couch in Hungary, and discovers a new artistic path that brings Yiddish to the screen and launches a filmmaking career? Join us for a Zoom conversation with
Prof. Pearl Gluck
Pearl is a filmmaker and professor of film production at Penn State University, and founder of Palinka Pictures. Her work spans documentary and narrative cinema, integrating Yiddish language and themes of memory, family, and personal storytelling. Her films have screened at PBS and Film Forum, among others, as well as in Cannes-affiliated programs. Her most well-known films include Divan, Where Is Joel Baum? and Castles in the Sky. We will discuss her creative process, the presence of Yiddish in her work, and the backstory behind selected films. With her permission, we will also show short excerpts for discussion.
