דען

(usually used to express doubt, disbelief or sarcasm)

1. Who else? (= ‘Who else were you expecting?’) = ווער דען?

ווער דען האָסטו געמיינט וועט קומען?

[VER DEN HOSTÚ GEMÉYNT VET KÚMEN?]

Who else did you think was coming?

2. What else (can you do)?/What were you expecting? = <וואָס דען <וואָדען?

דער אויטאָ פֿאָרט נישט, וועט מען מוזן גיין צו פֿוס. וואָס דען ‹וואָדען› קען מען טאָן?

[DER ÓYTO FORT NIShT, VET MEN MUZN GEYN TSU FUS. VOS DEN <VODÉN> KEN MEN TON?]

The car isn’t working, so we’ll have to go by foot. What else can we do?

3. When, then? (= When were you projecting stg. to take place?) = ווען דען?

דער קלאַס הייבט זיך אָן 4:00. ווען דען האָסטו געמיינט, 6:00?

[DER KLAS HEYBT ZIKh ON FIR A ZÉYGER; VEN DEN HÓSTU GEMÉYNT, ZEKS A ZÉYGER?]

The class starts at 4:00; when did you think it was starting, at 6:00?

4. (Well,) then why – ?פֿאַר) וואָס (זשע) דען)

אַז דו ביסט נישט אין כּעס אויף מיר, (פֿאַר) וואָס (זשע) דען רעדסטו נישט מיט מיר?

[AZ DU BIST NIShT IN KAS AF MIR, (FAR) VOS (ZhE) DEN RÉDSTU NIShT MIT MIR?]

If you’re not angry at me, well, then why aren’t you talking to me?

5. It’s anyone’s guess/Who can tell? = ?ווער קען דען וויסן

ווער קען דען וויסן וואָס וועט פֿון זײַן מויל אַרויס?

[VER KEN DEN VISN VOS VET FUN ZAYN MOYL ARÓYS?]

It’s anyone’s guess what will come out of his mouth.

6. (= expressing doubt whether an event/activity took place)

איז די באַן דען אָנגעקומען?

[IZ DI BAN DEN ÓNGEKUMEN?]

Did the train ever [= ‘even’] arrive?

7. Is it my fault …? = ?בין איך &lt;איז ער/איז זי/זענען זיי&gt; דען שולדיק

וואָס בין איך דען שולדיק אַז זי איז געפֿאַלן איבער די אייגענע פֿיס?

[VOS BIN IKh DEN ShÚLDIK AZ ZI IZ GEFÁLN ÍBER DI ÉYGENE FIS?]

Is it my fault that she tripped over herself?

Do not use דען with the meaning ‘for, because’ – this is a Germanism

and obsolete in modern Yiddish.
