‫אַ גע‫בוירענער אין שטאָט מעקסיקע אין די 1950ער יאָרן, איז פֿינקלמאַן אויפֿגעוואַקסן אין אַ קהילה וווּ ייִדיש איז געווען די שפּראַך פֿון טאָג־טעגלעכן לעבן — אין דער היים, אין שול, אויף דער גאַס, און אין די טיפֿענישן פֿון דער נשמה.

‪Jacob Finkelman

‪Born and raised in 1950s Mexico City, Finkelman spent his childhood in a community where Yiddish was the language of everyday Jewish life — at home, in school, in the streets, and deep within the soul.

‪In this conversation, he will share memories of his early years in a Yiddish school, family life, and the rhythms of community — and reflect on how Yiddish continued to live and breathe in Latin America after the war. We’ll also hear about his long career — knowledge management in telecommunications around the world — and about his move to Israel, where he lives today.

‪‪Prof. Kotlerman is marking the publication of his new Yiddish poetry collection, Tkies-kaf: Diptikhlekh (Handclasp: Diptychs), recently released by CYCO (New York). The book presents poetic pairs – diptychs – that explore shared themes through shifting voices and reflections.

Kotlerman is a leading Yiddish scholar, author, and director of the Rena Costa Center for Yiddish Studies at Bar-Ilan University.

‪In this conversation, we read selected poems and explore the creative path behind them, alongside reflections on his wider work in Yiddish culture, literature, and memory.
