Heavy Metal in Yiddish: A pre-war musical tradition in a new Guise
One might think that metal music has very little to do with Jews and the Yiddish language, but there are two musical groups in the world – “Gevolt”, based in Israel, and “Dibukim”, based in Sweden – which create metal music entirely in mame-loshn. This lecture will analyze the connection between metal music and the Yiddish language and culture, and discover how these musicians help Jews of Ashkenazi descent deepen their Jewish identity and discover the Yiddish language and pre-Holocaust Yiddish traditions.
(This event will not have simultaneous English translation. However, after two weeks, you’ll be able to watch the event on YouTube with subtitles)
