The word ממש (pronounced [MÁMESh]) is used to indicate emphasis. It can be translated variously as ‘really,’ ‘literally,’ ‘exactly,’ ‘truly’ and ‘nothing short of.’

They look exactly alike (= ‘like two drops of water’).

זיי זעען ממש אויס ווי צוויי טראָפּן וואַסער.

[ZEY ZÉEN MÁMESh OYS VI TSVEY TROPN VÁSER.]


Each and every child in that class was smart.

 ממש יעדעס קינד אין יענעם קלאַס איז געווען קלוג.

[MÁMESh YÉDES KIND IN YÉNEM KLAS IZ GEVÉN KLUG.]
