Speakers, writers and students of the Yiddish language worldwide – from secular to ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jews, from biotech experts to food critics – now have a new, indispensable resource for answering the question, “How do I say it in Yiddish?” To meet the growing demand for current words and terms in Yiddish, the League for Yiddish, Inc., is delighted to announce that Indiana University Press has released the revised and expanded Second Edition of its acclaimed and award-winning Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary on September 14. This dictionary has become “THE” reference book for modern terms in Yiddish. The Second Edition, with 84,000 entries and subentries, expands the scope of the First Edition (published in 2016), by introducing terms that reflect usage in particular Yiddish-speaking communities, from specialized all-Yiddish computer user groups to ultra-Orthodox Hasidic Jews. Nearly 1,000 additional words, expressions, neologisms and phrases take on contemporary social movements, bio-tech, politics, and food specialties – all in Yiddish. |

“The Second Edition is an enduring statement that Yiddish and Jewish life have not only survived, but that they are marching forward,” writes Rakhmiel Peltz, Professor of Sociolinguistics at Drexel University, in his introduction to the Second Edition. The Second Edition of the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary builds upon the life work of the renowned lexicographer Dr. Mordkhe Schaechter, whose vast collection of terminologies and their dialectical differences were the basis of both this and the First Edition. “In my view, this magnificent dictionary is the most important contribution to the field of Yiddish Studies in the 21st century. It is indispensable for any student or scholar of Yiddish and will remain so for future generations. I always have it on my desk,” says Mikhail Krutikov, Professor of Slavic and Judaic Studies, University of Michigan.
“Indiana University Press was thrilled to be involved with publishing the revised and expanded edition of the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary. We know the award-winning dictionary will continue to be a wonderful resource for scholars and laypeople alike.” Dave Hulsey, Associate Director, Indiana University Press.
