Avremi Zaks
We will hear about his work as the Yiddish radio broadcaster and producer at the weekly Israeli radio program "Kan Yidish." He will also discuss his research work on daytshmerizmen in Yiddish, and his Yiddish teaching.

Avremi Zaks grew up in a Yiddish-speaking family in Kfar Chabad, Israel, and studied in a Yiddish-speaking kheyder and yeshive. He completed his master's in Yiddish at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Since 2013, he has been the host of Israel's weekly Yiddish radio show “Kan Yiddish,” where he discusses various topics in Yiddish and delivers the news. He teaches Yiddish to students at Beys Sholem Aleychem in Tel-Aviv, and in Ben-Gurion University, in Beer-Sheva.

"Yiddish in the Heights"
In New York, on November 20-21, 2022, the League for Yiddish presented a historic bilingual conference titled "Yiddish in the Heights: Exploring Yiddish Academia and Activism in Post-War New York – a conference marking the 15th yortsayt of Dr. Mordkhe Schaechter."
Co-sponsored with the Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies at Columbia University, as well as the Jewish Theological Seminary, two of the countless venues where Dr. Schaechter – the founder of the League for Yiddish – was a beloved teacher and researcher. More than a hundred people from all over America, as well as some from abroad, gathered in person to listen to the lectures, learn and enjoy. For two days, we spoke mostly in Yiddish. A rare opportunity!
