דער פֿרילינג איז שוין דאָ. ס׳איז צײַט אָפּצושטויבן אײַער ייִדיש און זי לאָזן בליִען.
קומט אויף דער ייִדיש־ליגעס שמועסקרײַז דורך זום.
קענט איר שוין מער ייִדיש ווי איר ניצט טאַקע? ליגט שוין אײַער ייִדיש צו לאַנג אין העפֿטן, קורסן, אָדער אָפּגעהיטענע מעלדונגען? זענט איר שטעקן געבליבן אין די זעלבע עטלעכע באַקאַנטע שמועסן? אפֿשר ווילט איר פּשוט האָבן מער מענטשן מיט וועמען צו רעדן, מער טעמעס אויף וואָס צו שמועסן, און אַ פּלאַץ וווּ מע קען זוכן ווערטער, אַ טעות מאַכן, און גיין ווײַטער.
דערויף האָבן מיר אונדזער חודשלעכן שמועסקרײַז.
דאָס מאָל וועלן מיר זיך אַרײַנטאָן אין פֿרילינג און נאַטור: פֿייגל און בלומען, רעגן און זונשײַן, ביימער, פֿרישע לופֿט, נײַעם וועטער, און דאָס געפֿיל אַז די וועלט הייבט זיך ווידער אָן אויפֿצוּוועקן. מיר וועלן צוזאַמען לייענען אַ פּאָר קורצע טעקסטן, און דערנאָך עפֿענען דעם שמועס פֿאַר אַלעמען.

Do you already know more Yiddish than you actually get to use? Has your Yiddish been sitting for too long in notebooks, classes, or saved posts? Are you stuck in the same few familiar conversations? Maybe you simply want more people to speak with, more topics to explore, and a space where you can search for words, make a mistake, and keep going.
That is what our monthly shmueskrayz is for.
This month, we’re stepping into spring and nature: birds and blossoms, rain and sunlight, trees and flowers, fresh air, changing weather, and the feeling that the world is waking up again. We will read a few short texts together, then open the conversation to everyone.
You do not need to speak perfect Yiddish. You just need enough to jump in. Yiddish does not have to be polished to be alive!
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to use your Yiddish more, this is it!

Justin Jaron Lewis is Associate Professor of Religion at the University of Manitoba. He previously served as a congregational rabbi in Kingston, Ontario. His work ranges across Hasidism, Yiddish, Jewish literature and folklore, religion and sexuality. He is the author of Imagining Holiness: Classic Hasidic Tales in Modern Times and translator of Many Pious Women, praises of Jewish women written in Yiddish in Renaissance Italy. He has published widely on Hasidic tales and related areas of Jewish culture and thought.

The History of the Workmen’s Circle in Montreal
For more than a century, the Workmen’s Circle played an important role in Jewish life in Montreal. The organization was one of the most important secular Jewish forces in the city and for many years fostered a rich cultural and communal life.
We invite you to tune in to this fascinating conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and the individual who led the Workmen’s Circle in Montreal in its final years:

In the early years of the twentieth century there were a number of Workmen’s Circle branches. These branches carried out a rich cultural program: they ran schools, theater troupes, choirs, and organized many other cultural activities. Over the years the branches gradually closed, and the remaining activities came together in one house. In the past year the house itself also closed. With that, a long chapter in the history of the Workmen’s Circle in Montreal came to an end. In our conversation, Shaul Edelstein will speak about the branches, about the life and activities that took place in that house, and about his own experiences in the final years of the organization.
