The League for Yiddish is pleased to announce that we have a new Executive Director.
Yankl Krakovsky is a Yiddishist, theater maker, and educator. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, Yankl has worked for more than a decade as a professional actor, writer, director, puppeteer, and teacher. As a 2024-2025 translation fellow at the Yiddish Book Center, he translated Yankev Kreplyak’s Yungvarg (Youth), an anthology of nineteen short stories published by Farlag Matones in New York in 1935. Yankl is currently a Field Fellow for the Wexler Oral History Project, and a Meturgeman Translation Fellow at the Princeton Institute for Hasidic Thought.
Yankl brings a youthful perspective to the position and a deep understanding of today’s young Yiddishist circles, especially how Yiddish is used on social media. If you’re on Facebook or Instagram, you’ve seen his recent animated postings of the League’s “Verter fun der Vokh” (Words of the Week).
Yankl will be working on developing various projects and initiatives targeted towards expanding interest in Yiddish as a living language, and fostering the speaking of Yiddish on a daily basis among Yiddish students and speakers of the language around the world.
Yankl will be happy to hear from you! He can be reached at yanklk@leagueforyiddish.org
