The word סתּם (which is never inflected) can be used as either an
adjective or an adverb, and has the various meanings denoted below.]
1. Adjective: ‘plain (old),’ ‘ordinary,’ ’regular,’ ‘mere,’ ‘run-of-the-mill,’ ‘garden-variety’
דאָס איז סתּם אַ פּען. / דאָס איז אַ סתּם פּען.
[DOS IZ STAM A PEN. / DOS IZ A STAM PEN.]
This is a plain old pen.
ער איז סתּם אַ מענטש וואָס האָט נישט ליב צו רעדן וועגן זיך.

The fact that she revealed the secret was really something!
3. Adverb: ‘for no special reason,’ ‘just for the heck of it,’ ‘without paying attention,’ simply,’ merely’ (For added emphasis: סתּם אַזוי or סתּם אין דער וועלט אַרײַן)
חיימל האָט סתּם אַזוי געוואָרפֿן דעם באַלעם אויפֿן דאַך.
[KhÁYEML HOT STAM AZÓY GEVÓRFN DEM BÁLEM AFN DAKh.]
Khayeml threw the ball on the roof just for the heck of it.
די באָבע פֿלעג איר שיקן מתּנות סתּם אין דער וועלט אַרײַן.
[DI BÓBE FLEG IR ShIKN MATÓNES STAM IN DER VELT ARÁYN.]
Her grandmother used to send her gifts for no special reason.
